Dances of the Great Plains - pastoral traditions and social background

The dance traditions of the Great Hungarian Plain (Alföld) form one of the richest and most multifaceted chapters of Hungarian folk culture, closely interwoven with the everyday life of herdsmen and the social structure of the region. Drawing on 18th–20th century sources, ethnographic collections, and dance folkloristics research, the lecture presents the characteristic features of the dances of the pastoral stratum, the early forms of the verbunk and csárdás, as well as improvised shepherd dances (such as stick and swineherd dances). Special attention will be given to how these dance forms reflect social hierarchy, the representation of masculinity, and the role of communal rituals. The lecture also explores the transformations of these traditions throughout the 20th century and their continuing presence in today’s folk dance movement and stage adaptations.
