
Mezőség and Szék: The specificities of the dance house and dance orders, their social impact.
The Hungarian dance tradition of Transylvania is one of the richest and best-documented chapters of European peasant culture, with two outstanding areas: the Mezőség region and, within it, the village of Szék. The lecture presents the world of the táncház (dance house) and the structure of the dance cycles, with particular emphasis on how the sequence of dances is constructed, the role of alternating slow–fast dance pairs and ballroom dances, and the organization of communal dance life. Comparing the dance material shaped in the multi-ethnic environment of the Mezőség with the highly archaic and well-defined dance cycle of Szék provides insight into regional variations as well as the understanding of community norms and social roles. The lecture also addresses how the táncház—as a key venue of community life—became a decisive framework for the expression of social relations and identity, and how this has influenced the ethos of the modern táncház movement.

Az előadás célja, hogy átfogó képet adjon Erdély két fontos táncterületének – Mezőség és azon belül Szék településnek – táncéletéről, a táncrendek struktúrájáról és azok társadalmi jelentéséről. A hallgatóság betekintést nyerhet:
• a táncház mint közösségi intézmény működésébe,
• a táncrendek funkciójába és szimbolikájába,
• valamint abba, hogy e hagyományos rend miként fejezi ki a társadalmi hierarchiát, a nemi szerepeket és a közösségi összetartozást.
A cél egy olyan tudományosan megalapozott értelmezési keret felvázolása, amely segíti a hagyomány mélyebb megértését, és hozzájárul annak mai örökségként való tovább éléséhez.
