Summary
CleanAIR is a cross-border environmental initiative uniting Oradea (RO) and Békéscsaba (HU) to fight air and water pollution through urban greening and advanced research.
Inspired by the “Walking Forest” concept, the project introduces mobile urban forests — groups of movable trees that purify air, reduce heat, and promote biodiversity in city spaces.
The University of Oradea and the University of Szeged lead cutting-edge studies and develop machine learning models to predict air quality.
Local communities, schools, and volunteers are directly involved in maintaining the green areas and learning about sustainability.
Project Aim
To reduce air and water pollution and create cleaner, cooler, and greener cities through innovative environmental measures and cross-border cooperation.
Objectives
✅ Implement mobile urban forests to improve air quality and mitigate heat
✅ Develop machine learning tools to forecast and manage pollution
✅ Strengthen cooperation between universities and local authorities
✅ Increase community awareness of environmental protection
✅ Support biodiversity and sustainable urban planning
Key Activities & Results
🔹 Urban Greening – Installation of mobile urban forests in pilot areas of Oradea and Békéscsaba.
🔹 Research – Development of machine learning models to predict air pollution and analyse plant efficiency.
🔹 Academic Cooperation – Exchange of students and best practices between the two universities.
🔹 Community Involvement – Engagement of citizens and schools in maintaining greenery and learning sustainable habits.
Partnership
Lead Partner: Oradea Metropolitan Area Intercommunity Development Association (RO)
Project Partners: Békéscsaba, City of County Rank (HU), University of Szeged (HU) and
University of Oradea (RO)
CleanAIR proves that when nature and technology work together, cities can breathe easier. By merging green innovation with scientific cooperation, the project builds healthier, more sustainable communities on both sides of the Romania–Hungary border.
