Summary
OncoSafe strengthens cross-border cooperation in cancer care between Timiș (Romania) and Csongrád-Csanád (Hungary) by improving the quality, safety, and accessibility of radiotherapy services.
The project focuses on establishing modern radiotherapy facilities, introducing state-of-the-art equipment, and developing joint safety and quality assurance protocols that raise treatment standards across both regions.
In Timișoara, the Emergency Municipal Clinical Hospital replaces its outdated linear accelerator with a new-generation radiotherapy system, ensuring safer and more precise treatments that meet current European standards.
In Szeged, the University of Szeged installs advanced dosimetry and all its accessories, a new patient monitoring system, and modern quality control software, ensuring high-precision treatment delivery.
To sustain long-term excellence, both partners jointly develop clinical protocols and conduct professional workshops on cutting-edge radiotherapy techniques and quality control. These sessions bring together doctors, medical physicists, and technicians from both sides of the border, creating a strong professional community dedicated to safe, effective, and personalised cancer care.
Through innovation, cooperation, and shared expertise, OncoSafe ensures that more patients can access faster, safer, and higher-quality treatment close to home.
Project Aim
To improve the quality and safety of radiotherapy for cancer patients in the Csongrád-Csanád–Timiș cross-border area through modern equipment, shared expertise, and harmonised treatment standards.
Objectives
✅ Improve access to advanced radiotherapy and ensure high treatment quality
✅ Reduce side effects and improve recovery and survival outcomes for patients
✅ Provide continuous professional training and promote joint knowledge exchange
✅ Implement cross-border clinical protocols and safety standards
✅ Strengthen cooperation between oncology institutions in Romania and Hungary
Key Activities & Results
🔹 Modern Radiotherapy Equipment – Timișoara: Installation of a new linear accelerator at the Emergency Municipal Clinical Hospital, replacing obsolete equipment and improving treatment precision and patient safety.
🔹 Upgraded Dosimetry and Monitoring Systems – Szeged: Acquisition of complex dosimetry tools, a patient control monitoring system, and dedicated software for imaging and quality control at the University of Szeged’s Department of Oncotherapy.
🔹 Professional Training & Workshops:
Three joint training sessions held in Szeged on topics such as Quality Control in Radiation Oncology and Commissioning of a Linear Accelerator, each with at least 12 participants from both partner institutions.
🔹 Joint Protocols & Clinical Guidelines:
Co-development of standardised radiotherapy protocols, including one focused on regular safety measurements using dosimetry analysis. These become part of the official medical procedures at both institutions.
🔹 Cross-Border Knowledge Exchange:
Workshops and collaborative sessions where medical experts share best practices in radiotherapy planning, quality assurance, and patient care.
