Summary

ECBC – PEIC improves cross-border healthcare services in the Timiș–Csongrád-Csanád region by filling important gaps in intensive and pediatric medical care, making cooperation between hospitals more effective, and building long-term partnerships among healthcare professionals. The project addresses a real need in a region where many patients cross the border to receive care, even though healthcare systems are organised at the national level.

Through targeted investments, the project increases the number of treatment spaces for critically ill patients and for children who need specialised care in Timișoara and Szeged. It also strengthens cross-border cooperation through digital tools for communication, a joint support system for complex cases, and a shared protocol for patient transfer.

The project promotes continuous learning through webinars, conferences, and professional exchanges, supporting medical staff in both countries.

Project Aim

To strengthen the quality, resilience, and accessibility of cross-border healthcare in the Timiș–Csongrád-Csanád area through infrastructure improvements, better coordination between medical units, and stronger professional cooperation.

Objectives

✅ Increase capacity to care for critically ill patients and children
✅ Improve communication and patient transfers between hospitals in Romania and Hungary
✅ Support long-term cooperation between healthcare professionals across the border
✅ Promote training and knowledge exchange
✅ Use medical equipment and infrastructure more efficiently

Key Activities & Results

🔹 New intensive care facilities in Timișoara – Timiș County Council expands the Intensive Care Unit within Timiș County Hospital, installing 8 new beds for critically ill patients  (4 rooms with 2 beds each), increasing capacity from 27 to 35 beds, with full support infrastructure.
🔹 New pediatric unit in Szeged  – The University of Szeged sets up a new 15-bed ward for children, in a 361 m² fully equipped space, improving both quality and capacity of care.
🔹 Medical equipment – The Emergency Clinical County Hospital of Timișoara equips the new intensive care beds and puts into use high-performance medical devices acquired during the pandemic.
🔹 Joint working group meetings – 8 joint sessions help create a support system for complex cases, a cross-border patient transfer protocol, and an online medical communication platform.
🔹 Webinars – 10 online sessions, each with 50 participants, focusing on topics relevant to both countries’ healthcare sectors.
🔹 Conferences – 4 one-day events (2 in Romania, 2 in Hungary) gathering at least 50 professionals per session for discussions and exchange of practices.
🔹Practice Stages  – 32 medical residents take part in 4 cross-border exchanges, each lasting 5 days, to learn and practice in new settings.
🔹 Residency exchange programmes – 32 young doctors take part in 4 exchange visits, each lasting 5 days, to gain practical experience across the border.
🔹 Shared medical protocols and tools – Development of a common system for patient transfers, expert medical consultations, and real-time communication between hospitals.

By combining modern infrastructure, cross-border cooperation, and digital innovation, ECBC–PEIC builds more resilient, better-connected, and more patient-focused healthcare services in the Timiș–Timiș-Csongrád-Csanád region, giving people timely access to the care they need, no matter which side of the border they are on.
