Summary

GCBR supports the shift towards sustainable renewable energy in the Hungary–Romania cross-border region. The project addresses the over-reliance on fossil fuels and fragmented electricity systems by creating two energy communities based on solar power and storage solutions. It also targets public institutions, helping them optimize and rationalize their energy use, contributing to a greener and more resilient region.

Project Aim

To establish a robust cross-border energy ecosystem, where renewable energy and regional cooperation drive sustainability, efficiency, and resilience.

Objectives

Promote the use of local renewable energy sources (solar, geothermal, biomass, wind, etc.)
Balance energy production and consumption through community sharing models
Improve energy-use behavior in public institutions by optimizing consumption
Enhance the region’s energy efficiency and sustainability

Key Activities & Results

🔹Establishment of Energy Communities – Creating two cross-border energy communities: one in Satu Mare County (RO) and one in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg County (HU), fostering cooperative energy management
🔹 Data Collection & Analysis – Assessing electricity production and consumption patterns to unlock the real potential of local green energy
🔹 Software Platform Development – Creating a smart digital platform to manage energy sharing in real time, ensuring non-profit, transparent operation of energy flows
🔹 Energy Efficiency Plans – Developing a full energy efficiency refurbishment plan for one high-consumption building in each county to reduce demand and improve efficiency
🔹 Installation of Renewable Systems – Supplying and installing solar photovoltaic (PV) systems and storage units in both regions, ensuring reliable, clean energy access
🔹 Community & Policy Engagement – Organizing forums, workshops, and awareness campaigns to shape attitudes, involve local stakeholders, and share best practices.

By bridging technology with community-driven energy models, GCBR is turning the cross-border region into a beacon of sustainable innovation.
