Summary

“Mureș Green Bridge” addresses a critical connectivity gap between Timiș County (RO) and Csongrád-Csanád County (HU) by preparing the feasibility study for a new cross-border bridge over the Mureș River. This bridge will link DN6 (Romania) with M43 (Hungary) and integrate cycling infrastructure and green-blue corridors, promoting sustainable mobility and reducing environmental impact.

The project responds to major challenges:

  • Weight restrictions at the Cenad border crossing forcing long detours
  • Heavy traffic through Cenad and Makó, causing congestion and pollution near schools and residential areas
  • Limited access to the Mureș Meadow natural area and its recreational potential
  • Lack of a river crossing that would enable 30–50 km cycling routes and improve cross-border labour mobility

By combining technical planning with environmental and mobility strategies, the project sets the foundation for cleaner, safer, and more efficient cross-border transport.

Project Aim

To improve the interconnection of major road corridors (DN6/M43), integrate green infrastructure, and support cross-border cycling networks through the development of the “Mureș Green Bridge” feasibility study.

Objectives

✅ Deliver an integrated feasibility study for the bridge and its road connections
✅ Plan cycling-friendly links to natural and urban areas
✅ Strengthen cross-border mobility for residents, workers, and visitors

Key Activities & Results

🔹 Integrated Feasibility Study (IFS) – covering the bridge and its connections:
~8.5 km link to DN6/RO via Cenad bypass
~500 m cycling-inclusive link to the roundabout on road 4425 (HU)

🔹 Cross-border cycling strategy – a micro-regional plan to close missing links in RO–HU bike networks for commuting, leisure, and tourism

🔹 Knowledge exchange and cooperation – sharing best practices, methodologies, and technical expertise to strengthen institutional capacity for future joint projects

By merging mobility planning with green infrastructure, “Mureș Green Bridge” creates a roadmap for safer traffic, cleaner air, and better access to nature, while boosting cross-border economic and social ties.
