The cross-border region of Hajdú-Bihar (HU) and Bihor (RO) faces growing energy security concerns and environmental challenges due to reliance on natural gas. As domestic production declines, the region will depend entirely on imports, increasing supply and price uncertainty. Gas-based heating also contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions and climate change.
RENEW |ROHU 617 addresses these issues by promoting renewable energy, particularly geothermal and solar energy as a clean, emission-free alternative. The project upgrades 27 public buildings across six municipalities, integrating renewable heating solutions and improving energy efficiency. It also removes barriers to cross-border cooperation in sustainable energy.
RENEW engages communities through joint initiatives, including a Cross-Border Renewable Energy Action Plan, summer camps, Energy Café events, and best-practice exchanges. These efforts foster local support for green energy and help Romania and Hungary meet EU climate targets, reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency by 2030.
RENEW facilitates the transition to clean and sustainable energy in the Romanian-Hungarian cross-border area by installing geothermal and solar energy systems, reducing fossil fuel dependency, and promoting green energy awareness.
✅ Increase the use of geothermal and solar energy for heating public buildings
✅ Enhance energy efficiency through infrastructure modernization
✅ Develop a Cross-Border Renewable Energy Action Plan
✅ Promote awareness and share best practices in sustainable energy
🔹 Infrastructure Modernization: Installation of geothermal heating systems in six municipalities and improvements in energy efficiency for public buildings.
🔹 Sustainable Energy Planning: Development of a joint Romanian-Hungarian Renewable Energy Action Plan to guide the long-term transition to sustainable energy.
🔹 Capacity Building & Awareness: Organization of study visits, thematic summer camps, Energy Café events, tree planting initiatives, and interactive activities for students and local communities.
🔹 Knowledge Sharing: Creation of a Good Practice Guideline for renewable energy use in public buildings, shared across the cross-border region.
By integrating geothermal and solar energy solutions, RENEW | ROHU00617 strengthens energy independence, reduces environmental impact, and fosters long-term cooperation for a sustainable future in the cross-border region. The project contributes to cleaner energy, reduced emissions, and enhanced cross-border cooperation, benefiting local authorities, schools, healthcare institutions, and communities.
